The Principality Stadium in Cardiff has completed the largest solar panel installation of any sports venue in the United Kingdom, fitting more than 3,000 panels across its iconic retractable roof. The £1 million project is expected to generate significant savings for the venue while helping to secure the financial future of one of Britain's most recognisable sporting arenas.
Project details and savings
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) installed 3,296 solar panels across approximately 6,000 square metres of roof space at the stadium. According to the WRU, the system is expected to save between £300,000 and £400,000 per year on energy bills and generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 50 matchdays annually, as reported by the Football Ground Guide.
The panels have been operational since February and recently enabled the stadium to operate completely off-grid during periods of strong sunshine during recent heatwaves, with excess power even being exported back into the grid. The WRU says the massive £1 million investment could pay for itself within two to three years, with savings being reinvested into the sport.
Venue significance
The Principality Stadium, formerly the Millennium Stadium, is best known as the home of Welsh rugby, but it also hosts major football matches, including domestic cup finals, international fixtures and UEFA competitions. Away from sport, it has been the venue for major concerts and events, including the Take That Circus tour this week. Later this summer, the Community Shield clash between Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City is also set to be held there on August 16.
Known since 2016 as the Principality Stadium, the venue is the national stadium of Wales with a capacity of 73,931. It boasts a retractable roof and was initially built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup, replacing the former stadium on the site known as Cardiff Arms Park.
Industry reaction
The Football Ground Guide commented: "Stadium redevelopment isn't always about adding seats or building new stands. This is a different type of investment, but one that makes plenty of sense for a venue that hosts football, rugby and major events throughout the year."
"Reducing operating costs while improving sustainability is a win-win, and the fact that the Principality Stadium now boasts the largest solar installation of any UK sports ground only adds another impressive milestone to one of Britain's most iconic venues," the guide added.
