Households in three Australian states are set to benefit from a new initiative offering three hours of free solar power each day. The scheme, known as the "solar sharer" offer, is scheduled to begin in July next year and aims to encourage greater use of electricity during the middle of the day, when solar generation is at its peak.
The initiative is designed to ease pressure on the national grid by shifting consumption away from peak times. Energy Minister Chris Bowen expressed optimism about the plan, highlighting Australia's substantial solar capacity.
"We're a solar nation … with 4.2 million households with solar on their roofs," Mr Bowen said. He hopes the free power window will incentivise households to run appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers during daylight hours, aligning demand with renewable supply.
While the specific states have not been named, the offer is expected to reduce household energy bills for those who participate. Further details on eligibility and implementation are anticipated closer to the launch date.
