UK Deposit Return Scheme: 20p Charge on Bottles and Cans from 2027
UK Deposit Return Scheme: 20p on Bottles and Cans from 2027

The UK government has confirmed that a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for drinks containers will launch on October 1, 2027, across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Operated by Exchange for Change, the scheme requires shoppers to pay a refundable 20p deposit when purchasing eligible single-use plastic and metal containers ranging from 150ml to three litres.

How the Deposit Return Scheme Works

Under the DRS, a redeemable deposit is placed on specific drinks containers. Consumers can claim their deposit back by returning empty containers to designated collection points, including supermarkets, local retailers or Reverse Vending Machines. No receipt or proof of purchase is needed, allowing anyone to return containers they find, provided they are in good condition.

The government aims to dramatically boost recycling rates and reduce litter by incentivising the return of empty drinks containers instead of improper disposal. According to Gov.uk, an estimated 6.5 billion single-use drinks bottles and cans go to waste each year rather than being recycled — more than 17 million every day.

Environmental Impact and Official Comments

“Far too many of these bottles and cans end up littered on our high streets or strewn across our beaches and countryside, causing harm to our precious wildlife,” the government stated. The scheme is designed to reward environmentally responsible behaviour and cut down on plastic pollution.

The initiative covers England, Scotland and Northern Ireland from October 2027. It applies to single-use plastic and metal drinks containers between 150ml and three litres. The deposit will be refunded upon return, encouraging consumers to participate actively in recycling efforts.
