Dehumidifiers that have been left unused for months can become clogged and mouldy, releasing spores into the air when switched back on. A simple 15-minute cleaning routine before the cold weather begins can prevent this and keep the device effective for drying laundry.
Why dehumidifiers grow mould
Dehumidifiers suck up dust and moisture, creating an ideal environment for mould spores and bacteria to grow inside the machine. These can linger throughout the year and be released into the air when the device is turned on again, posing a health hazard and increasing mould growth in the room.

If you've noticed a lingering ‘musty’ smell or spotted dark speckles around the water tank, it’s high time for a deep clean before those spores start circulating back into your home.”
Step-by-step cleaning guide
Before cleaning, ensure the dehumidifier is unplugged and kept far from any switches. Empty the water tank; if there is no staining, use soapy water made from washing-up liquid and warm water to clean it.
If black spots or a slimy film are visible inside the tank, pour equal parts white vinegar and warm water into it and leave it to soak for 30 minutes. White vinegar contains acetic acid, which kills fungus and is a natural alternative to harsher chemical cleaners.
Filter and surface care
Remove the filter if possible and shake it over a bin to remove loose dust, or vacuum it. Then rinse it under a cold tap. Use a damp cloth with vinegar to wipe down the air outlet and other surfaces, and a vacuum brush attachment can clear dusty buildup.
Leave all disassembled parts to air dry for a few hours, and only reassemble when completely dry. If any moisture remains, turning the dehumidifier on could be a fire hazard.
Once cleaned, the dehumidifier will be mould-free and more effective for the upcoming cold weather, as trapped dust has been removed.
