British holidaymakers have been criticised for leaving large amounts of inflatable waste on beaches across popular destinations, sparking environmental concerns. The issue has been highlighted by locals and tourists alike, who report seeing discarded lilos, dinghies and other inflatables littering shorelines.
One Reddit user, 'MittlerPfalz', initiated a discussion on overtourism, but several comments focused on the waste problem. 'NataschaTata' noted that in Albania, 'the beaches are full of broken inflatables left behind by Brits'. Another user, 'KingCarnivore', added: 'It's a disgrace. They buy cheap inflatables, use them once, and abandon them.'
The problem is particularly acute in Mediterranean hotspots such as Tulum, Mexico, and the Isle of Skye, Scotland. In Tulum, 'lalalibraaa' observed: 'The beach is littered with plastic debris, including inflatables. It's heartbreaking.' Meanwhile, on Skye, 'Ceorl_Lounge' complained: 'Parking lots are full, and the beaches are covered in abandoned inflatables.'
Environmental groups have urged tourists to take responsibility for their waste. 'These items are not biodegradable and harm marine life,' said a spokesperson for the Marine Conservation Society. 'We urge visitors to reuse or recycle inflatables rather than discarding them.'
The issue has also been noted in Malta, where 'BCH0417' remarked: 'The beauty of the beaches is overshadowed by the rubbish left behind.' Local authorities are considering fines for those caught leaving inflatables on beaches.
