Binman Reveals Correct Way to Dispose of Carrier Bags
Binman Reveals Correct Carrier Bag Disposal Method

A binman has clarified the correct method for disposing of supermarket carrier bags, offering guidance to households across the UK. Many homes accumulate numerous carrier bags, but proper disposal remains a common source of confusion.

Understanding Carrier Bag Recycling

Most supermarket carrier bags, often referred to as 'bags for life', are designed for multiple uses and are more robust than older versions. However, when they wear out or accumulate in large numbers, knowing how to dispose of them correctly is essential.

Recycling rules were updated earlier this year with the introduction of the Simpler Recycling regulations in England. Despite these changes, many people remain unsure about the correct disposal method.

Binfluencer Advice

One refuse collector, known as 'Binfluencer' No1 Binman on TikTok, has built a following of over 170,000 by answering common recycling questions. Recently, he addressed a query about Tesco carrier bags and whether they can be recycled.

The binman confirmed that carrier bags are recyclable but emphasised that they cannot be placed in household recycling bins. Instead, they should be taken back to the supermarket, where they are accepted for recycling. He explained that putting them in home recycling bins can cause blockages in recycling plant machinery.

Alternative Disposal Methods

If returning to the supermarket is not convenient, the binman recommends placing carrier bags in the general waste bin or reusing them as intended. This approach avoids potential issues at recycling facilities.

Paper Bags

Separate rules apply to paper carrier bags. Experts at Best Pac UK note that paper bags can be recycled if they are made entirely from paper. However, laminated paper bags, which have an extra plastic film layer, cannot be recycled due to the lamination process. These are commonly used for food items and perishable products.

By following these guidelines, households can ensure they dispose of carrier bags correctly, contributing to more efficient recycling and reducing environmental impact.
