A doctor has shared a 'simple' cooling tip that may help you sleep during a heatwave. Dr Jonny Betteridge, an aesthetic doctor and founder of JB Aesthetics, posted the science-backed advice on TikTok. He previously worked in NHS Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care, and Anaesthetics.
The 'Ice' Method for Better Sleep
In the video, Dr Betteridge explained that for patients with dangerously high temperatures (40-43 degrees) from heat stroke, drug reactions, or severe infection, rapid cooling involves placing ice packs on major blood vessels: the neck, underarms, or groin. He finds the armpits most effective.
He advised: 'Get yourself two small ice packs and wrap them in thin cloth or a gym top. The effect on body cooling is so good. I like to side sleep, so put it under my armpit, lie on my side. That, combined with a fan, was just enough to relax me and send me off to sleep.'
Public Reaction
Social media users loved the tip. One commented: 'Great tip and thank you. Didn't know this.' Another said: 'I love this! Definitely trying.' A third added: 'Ooo this sounds great.'
Additional Advice from British Red Cross
The British Red Cross also shares heatwave sleep tips. Quality sleep is essential for body recovery, temperature regulation, and mental health. Recommendations include sleeping on the lowest level of your home, wearing cold socks, taking a cool shower before bed, avoiding alcohol, turning off electrical items, using a cotton sheet, and wearing loose-fitting clothing.
