Victor Munoz will become Liverpool's first signing of the summer, and their first of the Andoni Iraola era. The long transfer saga is almost over after Liverpool moved quickly to agree a fee with Osasuna and oversee a medical for the 22-year-old Spain World Cup winger as he trains with his nation in Tennessee.
With the medical passed and a six-year deal on the table, the move for a player renowned for his pace is progressing rapidly. Munoz completed 12 dribbles in a match against Rayo Vallecano last season, the most by a player in a single match in Europe's top five leagues across the campaign.
The swift, decisive nature of the deal might have left Newcastle frustrated for a third time in a year after the signings of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. It also reminds of how Liverpool would often do business away from the limelight, such as the surprise signings of Fabinho in 2018 and Cody Gakpo in 2022.
If the Munoz signing signals a return to the old, Michael Edwards-driven ways, it could also evidence the 'opportunistic' approach that Richard Hughes spoke of when arriving at Liverpool. While Liverpool hit headlines last summer for signing Isak, Wirtz, and Ekitike, it was Arsenal's transfer policy that served them best. Arsenal signed seven first-team players, with four arriving for fees between £48m and £60m, helping them win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.
With Andoni Iraola facing continental competition for the first time, he needs plenty of tools to fight on all fronts. The addition of Munoz, a pacy wide player who can play across the front line and won't expect to start every game, looks a clever one.
