Air quality data has revealed that Stockport is the area of Greater Manchester hardest hit by smoke from ongoing moorland fires, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 154, classified as 'unhealthy' by IQ Air. The fires near Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham and on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop continue to send plumes of smoke across the region.
Firefighting Efforts Continue
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was first called to Dovestone on Saturday night, and a major incident was declared on Monday afternoon as crews worked to contain the blaze amid hot weather. The wildfire at Tintwistle, which broke out on June 24 during the heatwave, has burned an area equivalent to 350 football pitches. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident and said full operations would resume on Tuesday, with firefighting expected to continue 'for some time'.
Air Quality Impact
According to IQ Air, Stockport's air quality peaked at around 154 AQI, with the worst effects in Heaton Moor. Other areas such as Withington, Hulme, and Chorlton-cum-Hardy recorded 'moderate' air quality with AQI scores above 50, while some areas remained 'good'. The index measures six key pollutants including sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide.
Public Safety Warnings
Residents near both Dovestone and Tintwistle have been urged to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the affected areas. A woman, aged 20, was arrested on suspicion of arson and was being questioned in custody. Eyewitnesses reported hearing 'loud bangs' prior to the fire, and videos of youths setting off fireworks were shared on social media. A councillor said some of those involved had been identified.
