Gateshead School Set for £700,000 Roof Repairs Over Three Summers
Gateshead School Gets £700,000 Roof Repair Contract

Gateshead Council is expected to approve a £692,929 repair contract for Glynwood Community Primary School in Low Fell, addressing defective roof coverings and other maintenance issues. The contract, which will be awarded to specialist roofing firm Hodgson Sayers, is set to be signed off at the council's cabinet meeting on Wednesday, July 15.

Scope of Works

The project includes roof repairs, ongoing internal maintenance, and internal works. Due to the scale of the job, the work will be carried out over three consecutive summers: 2026, 2027, and 2028. The contract also includes provisional sums of £10,000 for each of the next two years to cover potential inflation.

Council's Rationale

A council report states: "The only alternative is not to award the contract. In that instance, works would not be completed, and site risks around roof condition would continue, and the window to start works this summer break would be missed. This alternative has been rejected." The report emphasizes that the repairs will ensure a safe, dry, and thermally stable school environment, reducing risks of environmental, structural, and safety issues. It adds that the work will help maintain access to education for children at Glynwood Primary School, which is a contributing factor to health and wellbeing across the life course.

Expected Benefits

The works are also anticipated to improve weatherproofing and thermal performance, reduce energy use and water ingress, extend the asset's life, enhance climate resilience, and lower ongoing maintenance requirements. The contract is expected to be approved at Gateshead Council's 10 am cabinet meeting at the Civic Centre.
