Nearly 500 roads across Wythenshawe could see their speed limits cut from 30mph to 20mph. Manchester council is consulting on the plans, which aim to improve safety and create a more consistent road network.
Proposed Changes
The changes would affect 486 roads, further aligning limits in the area with other parts of the city, where 68 per cent of roads already have 20mph restrictions. The council said the move is intended to reduce the number and severity of crashes.
"Every year, around 1,000 people are killed or seriously injured on Greater Manchester's roads," the council posted on Facebook. "Evidence shows that lower speeds can help reduce the severity of collisions and improve safety for everyone using our streets, whether you're walking, driving, cycling, or wheeling."
Impact on Journey Times
The town hall said it does not expect the changes to have a noticeable impact on journey times, insisting research suggests delays across Manchester are caused by congestion at junctions, rather than the speeds of drivers. Some key routes, including certain arterial roads, will retain a 30mph limit.
Public Reaction
People appear split on the proposals. Nick Jordan wrote on Facebook: "It will cost a fortune to change the signs and road markings and people will still ignore it and speed." Margaret Thompstone said: "Good idea." Dave Hewitt added: "20 is plenty."
