Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson has welcomed the £821,000 given to North Lanarkshire as part of the Scottish Government’s Summer of Sport programme for schoolchildren. The funding is part of almost £12 million being awarded to local authorities across Scotland.
Free and Low-Cost Activities for Young Scots
Over the summer, thousands of young Scots will benefit from a range of free and low-cost sporting activities. This initiative helps families with the cost of accessing sport while encouraging young people to lead active and healthy lifestyles.
The funding forms part of a £20 million investment announced in the Scottish Budget, which also included plans to expand free swimming lessons to every primary school child in Scotland.
Landmark Year for Scottish Sport
The fund is supporting young people to get involved in sport during a landmark year for Scottish sport. Scotland is returning to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in almost three decades and hosting the Commonwealth Games.
Ms Adamson said: “I’m really pleased that young people in North Lanarkshire are set to benefit from this Summer of Sport funding, something I was proud to back as part of the SNP government’s budget for this year.
“The £821,000 investment will help provide more opportunities for young people to take part in sport and physical activity over the summer, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to participation.
“Between the World Cup and hosting the Commonwealth Games, this has been a year to remember for sport in Scotland, and I hope this funding will inspire even more young people across North Lanarkshire to get involved and enjoy the benefits of being active.
“The SNP is taking action to improve opportunities for our young people here in North Lanarkshire and across Scotland, helping them build confidence, develop new skills and lead healthier lives.”
