Starting from September 2026, schools across the UK must enforce a new uniform rule limiting the number of branded items parents are required to buy per child. The change, implemented by the government, aims to make school uniforms more affordable for families.
New Limits on Branded Items
Under the new guidelines, most schools will only be allowed to ask parents or carers to purchase a maximum of three branded uniform items per child. Secondary and middle schools can require up to four branded items if one of them is a tie. The rules apply to academy schools and trusts, maintained schools, non-maintained special schools, pupil referral units, and local authorities.
The government website states that 'schools should ensure that their uniform supply arrangements give the highest priority to cost and value for money' to prevent parents from making multiple repurchases.
Cost of School Uniforms
School uniforms are a significant expense, with the average cost for primary school pupils totaling £350 and £442 for secondary students, although this can vary greatly depending on school requirements.
The changes are part of the Education (Guidance about Costs of School Uniforms) Act 2021. However, a survey of 1,000 parents with school-aged children found that 48% had no idea about the new rules, according to advice site Money Wellness.
Parental Opinions
Parents remain divided on the impact of the changes. Around three in five (61%) believe limiting branded items will save them money, but 30% do not expect to see any savings at all.
