The UK government has announced a bill discount scheme for households living near new or significantly upgraded electricity transmission projects, such as overhead pylons. Eligible households can receive up to £2,500 in discounts on their electricity bills over a ten-year period.
Eligibility and first wave of projects
Residents living within 500 metres of eligible projects are expected to be the primary beneficiaries. To qualify, projects must have commenced construction on or after March 10, 2025, and have secured all necessary legal consents.
The first wave includes 43 transmission projects spanning from the Scottish Highlands to the south of England. Hundreds of thousands of homes are eventually expected to benefit as the scheme expands.
Purpose and benefits
Energy Minister Michael Shanks highlighted the importance of updating the national electricity grid to guarantee energy security and boost economic growth. He referred to this as a time of national renewal, noting that upgrading outdated 1960s-era infrastructure will create a sustainable way to lower electricity costs for households.
The government has framed these upgrades as a necessity for national energy security. Much of Britain's current electrical grid dates back to the 1960s and requires significant modernisation to accommodate new sources of cleaner, homegrown energy. By reinforcing the grid, the government aims to reduce the country's reliance on volatile international fossil fuel markets.
How the discount will be applied
For most qualifying residents, the process will be automatic. Energy suppliers, including National Grid Electricity Transmission, SP Energy Networks, and SSEN Transmission, will work alongside Ofgem to identify eligible households. Discounts are expected to be applied every six months directly to electricity accounts.
While most homes will not need to take any action, some households, particularly those on commercial meters, may need to submit a manual application. Further detailed information and direct contact from suppliers are expected in the first half of next year.
Beyond individual bill discounts, the government is also emphasising community-wide benefits through dedicated guidance for hosting infrastructure. These community funds are set to deliver millions of pounds for local projects, such as the £4 million earmarked for the Bramford to Twinstead reinforcement area.

Ofgem Executive Director for Delivery and Schemes, Neil Lawrence, said: "Communities that host new electricity transmission infrastructure are playing a vital role in delivering the cleaner, more secure energy system Britain needs. The Bill Discount Scheme will help ensure eligible households living near these projects see a direct benefit through discounts on their energy bills."
Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Network, said: "Communities are playing a role in enabling and supporting the greatest re-wiring of the UK energy system in decades and it is good to see them directly benefiting, through bills and our community benefit funds."
Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander said: "Scotland is playing a central role in the UK's energy transition, and as we build the modern grid needed to harness that power, it is only right that local families living alongside new pylons see real, direct savings on their electricity bills."
