South Lanarkshire Council is encouraging communities and individuals to get involved in its decision-making processes by submitting public petitions. These petitions help address issues that affect people's daily lives and improve direct engagement with the council.
How the Petitions Process Works
If deemed appropriate, the Petitions Committee, first established in 2018, can consider petitions put forward by communities and individuals. Petitions should focus on services the council provides or issues involving the council that affect the community. The purpose of the petition and the expected outcome should be clearly explained.
Council Encourages Transparency
Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Resources, Jackie Taylor, said: “We recognise that part of being an open and transparent council is giving people the opportunity to engage with us directly.” She added: “The petitions process, and ultimately the Petitions Committee, gives people that opportunity.”
