True Bites Family Butchers has shared a method for cooking sausages in the oven, which they say produces a golden brown, juicy finish without the need for a frying pan.
The butchers explained that oven cooking ensures sausages cook evenly and is especially convenient when preparing multiple sausages at once, such as for a cooked breakfast, family meals, or dishes like sandwiches, mash, casseroles, or tray bakes.
Oven temperature and timing
The experts advise cooking sausages at 200°C (180°C fan). This temperature browns the exterior while ensuring the centre is cooked properly. For particularly thick sausages, they suggest reducing the temperature slightly and cooking for a little longer.
Most sausages take around 25 to 30 minutes in the oven. Thinner sausages may cook quicker, while thicker butcher's sausages may need closer to 30 to 35 minutes. The butchers recommend turning them halfway through so they brown evenly on both sides.
Preparation and cooking steps
Once the oven reaches the correct temperature, arrange the sausages on a baking tray. Lining the tray with foil or baking paper makes clearing up easier. Lean sausages may need a light drizzle of oil, but most contain sufficient fat and require very little additional oil.
Place the tray in the oven and cook for 25 to 30 minutes, turning the sausages over halfway through. The result is sausages with a golden brown exterior, piping hot throughout, which pair well with mash, chips, eggs, beans, gravy, onions, or bread rolls.
Frozen sausages advice
The butchers note that cooking sausages in the oven is simple, reliable, and ideal for easy meals with minimal fuss. For frozen sausages, they advise defrosting them thoroughly in the fridge before cooking, as starting from frozen can result in uneven cooking, particularly with thicker sausages. If packaging indicates they are suitable for cooking from frozen, follow the provided instructions and allow additional cooking time.
