Flies will flee from homes this summer with a simple natural repellent solution. A homemade mixture of lemon, rosemary, cloves, and lemongrass essential oil provides an effective, chemical-free way to deter insects without harsh products.
How to Prepare the Repellent
Cleaning enthusiast and TikTok creator Anna Louisa, known as Anna Louisa at Home, shared the easy method. Fill a saucepan halfway with water, add one cut lemon, 10 to 20 cloves, one to two sprigs of rosemary, and 10 to 20 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Heat on the hob until simmering, then let it bubble and steam for a couple of hours, allowing the fragrance to spread.
Anna Louisa suggests topping up the water as needed. For prolonged use, refresh the water and ingredients every couple of days, as the scent will fade over time. The mixture can also be poured into a spray bottle for use around the house, applying it to entry points like doorframes and windowsills where flies gather.
Why These Ingredients Work
Lemon's citrus oils, such as limonene, are particularly off-putting to flies, which dislike strong citrus scents. Lemongrass, with citral and citronella, interferes with flies' chemical receptors and hides pheromone trails they use to navigate and find food. Rosemary's woody aroma, containing camphor, eucalyptol, and cineole, overwhelms sensory receptors and masks appealing food smells. Cloves contain eugenol, a sharp compound that disrupts scent pathways and acts as a natural deterrent.
When making homemade repellents, caution is advised, as wrong ingredients could backfire and attract flies instead.
