Hoylake Beach's future will be discussed this week as campaigners seek special status to protect the site from development. Wirral Council has received an application to register the beach as a Town or Village Green, which would provide several protections for the land.
Public Hearing Scheduled
A public hearing is set for Friday, August 7, at Melrose Hall, Hoylake CH47 3BU, from 11.30am to 1.30pm. An independent inspector will hear evidence supporting the application.
If granted, Town or Village Green (TVG) status would protect the land from development. A TVG is an area used by the public for sports, recreation, and other pastimes, and is protected as such. To qualify, an application must prove that a significant number of people have used the land for at least twenty years without needing permission.
How to Participate
Members of the public wishing to make representations at the hearing regarding use of the land during the 20-year period should contact Wirral Council by 3pm on Thursday, August 6. They must provide a copy of their statement when making contact, via email to hoylakebeachtvg@wirral.gov.uk.
The local Conservative Party ward councillors have backed the efforts. They previously stated on Facebook: "This protects the beach - the sandy beach. Village Green status means it has to be kept as was. Green doesn't mean grass."
Local Support
Speaking after a previous meeting, Cllr Andrew Gardner said: "This isn't just about a beach. It's about the principle that local people should have the final say over their own amenity spaces."
The inspector will consider the evidence before making a recommendation to the council on the application.
