Thousands of households in Greater Manchester have been told their bin collections will be changing this week as bin crews deal with high temperatures.
The region will see rising temperatures for the next couple of days thanks to an unprecedented fifth heatwave in the UK. Temperatures are expected to peak at 32C, with health alerts already issued as some parts of the UK prepare for 36C weather.
Councils adjust collection times
Trafford is expected to be the hottest borough at 32C while Stockport, Manchester, Tameside, Wigan, Bury and Salford are forecast highs of 31C and Oldham, Bolton and Rochdale are expected to reach 30C.
In a post, Bury Council said: "With the temperatures that are forecast for Wednesday and Thursday this week our waste collection crews will be starting at 6am on these days only. Please could you put out your usual bins in plenty of time and thank you for your patience."
Tameside Council in a post also said: "With further hot weather forecast, our bin crews will be starting their rounds an hour earlier than normal from tomorrow (Tuesday) until the end of the week to make the most of the cooler morning conditions. Please ensure your bins are left out for collection by 6am or leave them out the night before."
No changes in some areas
Manchester, Oldham, Stockport, Bolton, and Wigan councils said there were no planned changes to bin collection schedules this week due to the hot weather. Salford Council was approached for comment.
While they are not planning to change things when it comes to collections, a spokesperson for Rochdale Council said: "We will continue to keep an eye on temperatures this week. Residents are advised to leave bins out the evening before, so crews can start rounds earlier if temperatures continue to rise."
Similarly, a spokesperson for the One Trafford Partnership said: "We are currently delivering the service as normal. Supervisors will be carrying out increased welfare monitoring of bin collection crews and providing additional hydration. Any changes to bin collections with be communicated through the council website, the media and our social media channels."
This is in contrast to the heatwave towards the end of June where some collections started as early as 5.30am. However the current wave is not expected to be as hot. Bin crews across many parts of the region began collections earlier to avoid the worst of the heat. Wigan council was the only council that confirmed there were no changes to their services.
