Experts are calling for 67 additional dog breeds to be added to the UK's banned list over animal welfare concerns. The proposed breeds include popular pets such as pugs, chihuahuas, and Great Danes.
Current Banned Breeds
At present, five breeds are illegal to own in Britain, including Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosas, and XL Bullies. Police can seize banned dogs based on their appearance alone, even if the animal is not acting dangerously.
Health Problems from Selective Breeding
The expansion targets breeds that suffer from severe health problems caused by selective breeding for appearance. According to PETA UK: "Flat-faced dogs like pugs and French bulldogs often struggle to breathe - all because people think animals with squashed faces are 'cute'." The charity warns that basic activities like running become difficult or impossible for these breeds.
Cavalier King Charles spaniels have brains too big for their skulls, causing sudden pain and obsessive scratching. Meanwhile, breeds with short legs and long spines like dachshunds struggle with mobility issues.
Specific Conditions
Up to a quarter of dachshunds develop intervertebral disc disease, causing severe back pain and paralysis. Welsh corgis face similar joint problems and arthritis due to their body structure.
The ban would make it illegal to sell, abandon, give away, or breed from any of the 67 targeted breeds across the UK.
