A near-total solar eclipse will be visible across the UK on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with about 96% coverage of the Sun by the new moon. This will be the most coverage seen from the UK and Ireland since 1999, according to Royal Museums Greenwich.
The eclipse will begin shortly after 6pm, reach maximum at around 7:10pm, and end around 8pm. While a full 100% eclipse will only be visible from places like Spain, Greenland, or Western Iceland, UK watchers will still see an impressive display, especially as the Perseid meteor shower peaks a couple of hours later.
Safety First: Why You Need Specialist Glasses
Looking directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse, can damage your eyes. Regular sunglasses are not sufficient as they do not reduce solar radiation. You need eclipse glasses that meet the international safety standard ISO 12312-2:2015(E). Check that the lenses are not scratched, torn, or punctured before use.
