Lady Bagot's Drive is a 3.9-mile (6.4km) circular walking route through Clocaenog Forest in North Wales, offering peaceful woodland paths, open fields, and riverside scenery. Originally built as a carriage path for Lady Bagot in the early 20th century, the trail remains a well-kept secret, largely known only to locals.
Wildlife and Scenery
The trail passes through Clocaenog Forest, a 40-square-mile (100 km²) conifer woodland that serves as a protected sanctuary for endangered red squirrels and black grouse. Dog owners are advised to keep pets on leads due to the abundant wildlife.
Route Details
The walk starts in the village of Rhewl, between Ruthin and Denbigh, with a free car park available. After a short stretch along the main road, the path leads through fields and into the forest, climbing to offer panoramic views of the Clywidian Range. The return leg follows the Afon Clwedog, an upland tributary of the River Severn.
Social media account Casgliad Collection praised the route, saying: "Peaceful woodland paths. Walk alongside the River Clwyd. Plenty of wildlife and a relaxing atmosphere." They also recommended ending the walk at Sugar Plum Tea Room, calling it "the perfect reward."
