The Welsh Mountain Zoo is celebrating the birth of two adorable red panda cubs, a significant step in its commitment to conserving one of the world's most endangered mammals.
Twin cubs born to Hop and JinJin
The twin cubs were recently born to the zoo's resident red pandas, Hop and JinJin, and are thriving under the attentive care of their mother. While they still spend much of their time safely in their nest, the youngsters are growing stronger each day and are expected to begin making an appearance over the coming weeks.
Visitors may soon catch a glimpse of the cubs later this summer as they start to venture outside under their mother's watchful eye.
Conservation milestone
With fewer than 10,000 red pandas left in the wild, they are threatened by rapid habitat loss from deforestation in the eastern Himalayas and the poaching trade. These births are the latest achievement in the zoo's proud history of breeding red pandas, a species classified as endangered in the wild.
As part of a European conservation breeding programme, the zoo plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy and genetically diverse population, helping to safeguard the future of this remarkable species.
