Recent research has identified ten baby girl names that are slowly falling out of favour with parents, and could go extinct by 2026. Gift website Personalisedbee examined data from the latest ONS baby name statistics, pinpointing the top ten names that have tumbled down the rankings between 2023 and 2024.
The company discovered that some of these include once-beloved choices, with Scarlett - previously a go-to option - gradually losing favour amongst parents. Among the most overlooked names are some relatively recognisable ones, yet they're failing to endure like their counterparts.
Personalisedbee found that the three girls' names most at risk of extinction this year are Jessica, Lola, and Scarlett. The company highlighted that Jessica has plummeted 12 positions in just 12 months, sliding from 83rd to 95th place. 573 babies received this name in 2023, dropping to 483 in 2024.
Lola has similarly declined in popularity, tumbling eight spots from 79th to 87th position. 595 newborns were given this name in 2023 versus 543 in 2024. The third casualty is Scarlett, which dropped seven positions from 72nd to 79th place. Registrations fell from 634 babies in 2023 to 610 in 2024.
Prashant, a naming specialist from Personalisedbee, has offered insight into why certain names are losing their appeal: "Names are a lot like trends in fashion or home décor. They can rise quickly when they feel fresh or modern, but just as fast they can fall out of favour as parents hunt for something new and unique."
