Jet2 has issued a warning to passengers travelling this summer, urging them to declare medical conditions when purchasing travel insurance. The budget airline says doing so 'could save you thousands'.
Millions Travelling This Summer
Around 30 million British holidaymakers are expected to travel through UK airports in July and August. Jet2 is offering 66 destinations with nearly 20 million seats on sale.
In a post on X on 27 July, Jet2 stated: 'Going away this summer? Declare your medical conditions when you buy travel insurance - it could save you thousands. If your details aren’t up to date, your claim could be rejected.'
Government Guidance on Travel Insurance
The airline linked to government advice explaining that travel insurance provides protection for unexpected events such as medical emergencies, lost luggage, cancellations, or natural disasters. The government advises travellers to purchase 'cover that is appropriate cover' for their trip.
Without adequate cover, holidaymakers could face expensive bills. The government warns against buying a basic policy lacking sufficient medical coverage or evacuation, failing to disclose medical conditions, not covering planned activities (e.g., skiing, water sports, quad biking), excluding cancellations or delays, or not covering all travel regions.
Real-Life Examples of Costly Gaps
One case cited by the government involved a teenager hospitalised after a mid-air collision with a paraglider, incurring £45,000 in care costs due to lack of insurance. Another involved a British tourist with inadequate insurance after a motorbike accident; the provider refused to cover a £23,000 bill because the policy only covered vehicles up to 50cc, while the individual was riding a 125cc motorbike.
Jet2's reminder comes as summer holiday travel peaks, aiming to help passengers avoid similar financial pitfalls.
