Bedgebury Forest: The Autumn 'Magic' Spot an Hour from London
Bedgebury Forest: Autumn Magic an Hour from London

Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest in Kent is highlighted as a prime destination for autumn colour, featuring over 2,000 acres of woodland, walking trails, and a dedicated autumn walking trail.

Nestled in the valley between Goudhurst, Hawkhurst, and Flimwell, the forest is locally known as one of the 'Seven Wonders Of The Weald'—a collection of seven heritage attractions across the High Weald region of Kent and East Sussex.

A Kaleidoscope of Autumn Colour

The forest's sheer number of trees, bordering trails, stretching over lakes, and dotted throughout the woodland, provides a stunning backdrop for walks. Within the Bedgebury National Pinetum, more than 10,000 specimen trees, including rare and endangered conifers, are on display.

For a different perspective, visitors can take to the treetops at Go Ape's high ropes experience for a bird's-eye view of the forest below.

Visitor Praise and Practical Advice

Tripadvisor reviewer Denise S from Cheshunt described the forest as 'magnificent' and said it 'looks like heaven'. She noted her criteria for a great walk include 'ample parking, clean toilets, fridge magnets on sale and a nice cup of tea and slice of cake for the reward after a long walk.'

Denise added: 'I enjoyed this place so much. I came here with my head full of worry but came away a different relaxed person. I was whacked out from the walking but could not stop watching this forest on YouTube. If I could give this place 10 stars then I would.' She advises picking up a map at the office, as the area is vast and easy to get lost in.

Entry Fees and Getting There

Entry to Bedgebury is free, but parking charges apply. On weekends and bank holidays, the fee is £12 per car, dropping to £10 during the week. An early bird slot—arriving by 8 am and leaving by 11 am—costs £3.50. Booking in advance is only needed for the Go Ape experience.

After walking, visitors can stop for a hot chocolate at Bedgebury Cafe, located next to one of the Pinetum's lakes. The forest is also known for its Christmas lights display.

From London, the quickest way is by car, taking around one hour and 20 minutes with light traffic. Alternatively, a train from Charing Cross to Wadhurst takes just over an hour, followed by a short train to Royal Tunbridge Wells and a coach that stops next to the forest.
