Spider season is in full swing, but you don't need to consult the web to banish these eight-legged invaders. Experts have shared 11 key ways to keep spiders out of your home this autumn.
Why spiders come indoors
For many, spider season is the worst time of year. Despite spiders playing an important role in clearing out unwanted insects like flies and woodlice, millions of arachnophobes dread early autumn because it's the peak time for large house spiders to scurry into living rooms, kitchens or bedrooms.
Autumn is the key spider mating season, as the eight-eyed, eight-legged male arachnids head into homes and flee from hiding spaces in search of a long-legged female to mate with before winter.
Natural scents and pets
Strong smells are a natural way to deter spiders from entering your home. Smells such as lemon, lime, oranges, or anything with a strong citrus aroma help repel spiders. Eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, or peppermint oil also work. Vinegar is another strong scent, but most people aren't keen on vinegar lingering around their homes. Rub or spray these scents around window sills and doors to help prevent spiders from entering.
Most cats and dogs enjoy a game of chase when they spot a spider. Although pets won't eliminate an entire infestation, they will help get rid of the odd few around the house.
Windows, lights and more
Most spiders are nocturnal, so keep windows and doors closed while you sleep to prevent them from getting into your home at night. Just like moths, spiders are drawn to light, so turn outside lights off when you're not using them and keep doors and windows closed or blinds shut when the lights are on inside.
