How and When to Water Your Plants During a UK Heatwave
Watering Plants in a Heatwave: Best Times and Tips

As the UK braces for a heatwave, with the Met Office issuing a red extreme heat warning for Wales, gardeners must focus on proper hydration techniques. Overwatering is a common mistake that can harm plants, according to gardening expert James, who shared his advice on TikTok.

Optimal Watering Times During a Heatwave

James emphasized that timing is crucial. The best time to water plants is early morning, but if that's not possible, late afternoon or early evening works well. He explained: "If you can't do that then I would say late afternoon or late evening is probably the optimal time because it then gives those plants some time to dry off." Watering at midday causes rapid evaporation, preventing water from reaching the roots, while watering late at night can leave soil moist overnight, attracting slugs.

Proper Watering Technique: Focus on Roots, Not Foliage

James advised watering heavily and infrequently rather than lightly sprinkling daily. "I like to water heavily and a light sprinkle is no good. You do want to water and leave it to soak to get that soil really moist and wet," he said. This encourages deeper root growth, which helps plants withstand heat. He warned against wetting the foliage, as it can lead to fungal diseases.

How to Check Soil Moisture and Avoid Overwatering

To determine if plants need water, James recommended inserting fingers into the soil to feel for dryness. "If it feels dry, it's time to give your plants a drink," he said. Overwatering can cause root rot and fungal infections. "So it's really important to check your soil before watering. If you overwater those roots, it could rot, you could promote fungal infections and diseases," he added. He urged gardeners not to water blindly just because it's hot, but to check plants daily and maintain optimal soil moisture.
