Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has issued a warning for Llangorse Lake near Talgarth, Powys, after identifying toxic blue-green algae in the water. The agency advises people to avoid all contact with the water and to keep pets and livestock away.
Health Risks and Precautions
Blue-green algae, actually cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that are dangerous to animals and humans. Skin contact can cause rashes, while ingestion may lead to illness. NRW has installed warning signs around the lake and urges basic hand hygiene for anyone who may have been exposed.
Algal Blooms and Climate Change
Blooms occur when cyanobacteria multiply excessively, often due to nutrient runoff and warmer temperatures. According to the Department for Environment, climate change is increasing the risk of blooms during summer and autumn. The algae may persist for days to weeks until conditions change and the bloom dies off.
