Viral European Method to Keep Home Cool in UK Heatwave

A viral TikTok video has shared a European method for keeping homes cool during the ongoing UK heatwave, which is expected to see temperatures reach 36°C in some areas on Thursday, July 9, 2026. The Met Office has forecast highs of 35–36°C on Thursday and Friday, with continued warmth through the weekend.

Step-by-Step Cooling Technique

The tip, posted on TikTok by BAM_Renovate, outlines a simple process: open all windows and doors early in the morning to purge hot, stale air and let in cooler air. Then, close all windows and doors to trap the cool air inside. The video explains that once the outside temperature rises above the indoor temperature, closing windows prevents heat transfer.

Additionally, closing curtains and blinds is recommended to block sunlight. The method emphasizes external shading, common in many European homes, as more effective than internal curtains. The video suggests hanging a light-coloured bed sheet or towel on the outside of windows, spaced off the glass, to reflect heat. Tin foil is also mentioned as a good option to radiate heat away.

Effectiveness and Testing

The TikTok creator tested the method using an ice cover for a car windscreen, reporting it “did a great job.” He noted that external shading prevents solar radiation from heating the glass and creating a radiator effect inside the home.

Heatwave Forecast and End

The Met Office stated: “Saturday could see highs of 34°C in south west England and 33°C on Sunday, before a gradual trend down.” Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree added: “It won't be a straightforward end to the warm weather. High pressure is expected to remain in charge through much of next week, but it will gradually migrate northwards. The overall signal is for continued fine, dry, and very warm weather at times for many parts of the UK into next week. There is, however, a chance of thunderstorms spreading into parts of the south and south west.”

Customers have been rushing to buy fans and air conditioning units, while others are turning to DIY solutions like this viral method to cope with the heat.
