Summerleaze Beach in Bude, Cornwall, has been named Britain's best beach for 2026 by The Times, and a recent visitor says the accolade is well-deserved. Toby Codd visited the seaside town last month and walked along the sweeping golden sands, noting the beach's cleanliness, accessibility, and scenic coastal views.
Easy access from town centre sets it apart
Unlike many UK beaches that require a long trek from parking or public transport, Summerleaze Beach is just a five-minute walk from Bude's town centre. Codd described finishing fish and chips in town and being on the sand within minutes. The route is well signposted, running alongside the canal, making it ideal for families with pushchairs and wheelchair users. A large car park is also available for day visitors.
Blue Flag status and clean facilities
The beach holds prestigious Blue Flag status, indicating excellent water quality, clean facilities, and lifeguard presence. Codd noted the beach was exceptionally clean and the toilets at the car park were well maintained. The beach spans over 300 metres wide, offering plenty of space even during busy periods.
Unique sea pool and surfing hotspot
During his visit, Codd discovered the Bude Sea Pool, a semi-natural tidal pool tucked beneath the cliffs. Built in 1930, it provides a safe swimming area away from ocean waves. The beach is also popular with surfers, thanks to reliable swells that attract both beginners and experienced surfers.
Perfect for a family day out
With its proximity to shops, cafes, and bars, Summerleaze Beach is a convenient destination for a full day out. Codd said the beach is certainly one of the best he has ever visited, and he is already planning a return trip.
