Ukrainian drones have successfully struck an oil refinery in Russia's Tyumen region, located over 1,200 miles from the Ukrainian border, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced. The attack marks a significant expansion of Ukraine's strike capabilities deep into Russian territory.
Zelensky Hails 'Effective Work' of Special Forces
In his statement, President Zelensky thanked the Ukrainian military's special operations units, praising their 'effective work'. He revealed that Ukraine has developed new long-range drones capable of operating over distances exceeding 1,800 miles, enabling such deep strikes.
Russian Governor Claims Attack Repelled
Alexander Moor, the governor of Tyumen Region, earlier reported that Russian air defences had repelled a drone attack on the oil refinery. According to preliminary reports, there was no damage, and staff were evacuated as a precaution. However, Zelensky's confirmation suggests the strike achieved its intended effect.
The incident underscores the escalating use of long-range drones in the conflict, with Ukraine demonstrating its ability to target critical infrastructure far beyond the front lines. The Tyumen refinery is a key facility in Russia's energy sector, and any disruption could have implications for fuel supplies.
