UKHSA Escalates Heat Health Alerts to Amber Ahead of Third UK Heatwave
UKHSA Escalates Heat Health Alerts to Amber for Third Heatwave

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has escalated heat-health alerts to amber for all regions in England, effective from 9am on Wednesday, 8 July, until 9pm on Sunday, 12 July. This upgrade comes just days before the third heatwave of the year is expected to arrive, with temperatures potentially reaching 34°C in the South East on Thursday.

Health Risks and Vulnerable Groups

The amber alert replaces the existing yellow alert, which remains in place until Wednesday morning. The UKHSA warns that rising temperatures could increase health risks, particularly for older adults and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: "Sustained periods of warm weather can result in serious negative health outcomes across the population, so it is important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun." He added: "Based on the current forecast, we don't currently expect the health impacts to be as high as the heatwave we saw at the end of June but older adults and those with pre-existing conditions are still at risk."

Advice for the Public

Dr Sousa urged people to check on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours: "If you have friends, family, or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecast and are following the necessary advice." Simple precautions include staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day, and keeping homes cool.

Temperature Forecast and Previous Records

The Met Office forecasts temperatures approaching the low 30s Celsius this week, peaking at 34°C on Thursday in the South East. While a prolonged spell of hot weather is expected, it is not predicted to be as hot and humid as last month's heatwave. In late June, a provisional UK June temperature record of 37.7°C was recorded in Lingwood, Norfolk, surpassing the previous June record of 35.6°C from 1976 by more than 2°C—a significant margin compared to typical record breaks of only a fraction of a degree.

Ongoing Monitoring

The UKHSA stated it will continue to monitor the situation over the coming days and adjust alerts as necessary.
