UK Households Warned to Check Fridges Before Heatwave

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging households to check their fridges and freezers as a scorching heatwave is set to sweep across the country this week. Temperatures are forecast to reach a sizzling 40°C in London, while other parts of the UK will experience peaks between 33°C and 39°C.

Red Warning Issued

The Met Office has issued a rare red warning for heat, covering 50 areas from Wednesday until the end of Thursday. Simultaneously, the UKHSA has placed heat health alerts in six UK areas from 1am on Wednesday until 11pm on Thursday. These alerts indicate a risk to life, even for the healthy population, according to Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA.

Advice for Households

As part of its guidance, the UKHSA advises households to take immediate steps to prepare. Key recommendations include closing curtains and windows in rooms that face the sun, and checking that fridges, freezers, and fans are working properly. Dr Sousa emphasized: “It is vitally important that people understand the risk posed by high temperatures like these, and take steps to keep themselves and their friends, families and neighbours safe.”

Staying Safe in the Heat

The UKHSA also advises avoiding direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm when UV levels are highest. If going outside, people should cover up with suitable clothing, such as a hat and sunglasses, seek shade, and apply sunscreen regularly. Simple actions like staying hydrated and keeping homes cool can make a significant difference.

Looking Out for Others

Dr Sousa added: “It’s also important to look out for others, especially elderly relatives, neighbours, and those with underlying health conditions, to make sure they are aware of the forecast and following the necessary advice.” The red heat health alert underscores the severity of the upcoming weather, urging everyone to take precautions.
