UK Heatwave: Hang Cold Towels in Windows to Keep House Cool
UK Heatwave: Cold Towels in Windows to Cool Your Home

Britain is bracing itself for another heatwave this weekend, but there is a simple trick to keep your house cool involving cold towels. Forecasters predict temperatures could reach 32C today (Friday, June 19), with a series of amber alerts in place across much of southern England.

How to Use Cold Towels to Cool Your Home

Deyan Dimitrov, laundry expert and founder of Laundryheap, explains that the cooling towel method involves hanging cold, damp towels at key entry points such as windows and doors. As the water evaporates, it cools the surrounding air, creating a natural cooling effect. For best results, freshen the towels with cold water every four hours. Hanging damp towels in front of a fan can also enhance the cooling effect.

Amber Heat Alert Issued

The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber alert covering London, the South East, the South West, and the East of England, in place until 8pm on Tuesday (June 23). The alert warns of increased demand on health services for vulnerable people and those over 65 with pre-existing conditions. With the UK set to be hotter than Barbados this weekend, the UKHSA also highlights risks of water-related incidents, including cold-water shock and drowning.

Additional Tips to Keep Your House Cool

Another expert advises opening your loft window to let hot air escape. Mikey Story of UK Flat Roofing & Insulation Specialists explains that the second storey is often the warmest because hot air rises. Opening the loft hatch or window creates an escape route for heat, especially when combined with opening other windows to promote airflow.

Meteorologists believe this hot spell could see temperatures rise as high as 34C, with a 40% chance of exceeding the highest ever June temperature of 35.6C set in 1957 and 1976.
