The UK government is advising people across the country to keep their windows and curtains closed between 9am and 8pm, especially as temperatures are set to soar next week. The Met Office predicts another heatwave, with some areas expected to reach highs of 36C on Wednesday, June 24 and Thursday, June 25.
Amber Heat Health Alerts Issued
A number of amber heat health alerts are in place across England, warning Brits of the potential impacts on healthcare and transport. Alerts have been issued for the East of England, London, South East, South West, North West, Midlands, and Yorkshire. A yellow alert is in place for the North East. All alerts will remain until Friday, June 26.
Why Keep Windows and Curtains Closed?
According to the government and experts at Which?, the UK's consumer champion, keeping windows, curtains, and blinds closed between 9am and 8pm helps keep rooms cooler by shielding against solar radiation and hot air. This is particularly important when the outside temperature is warmer than inside. Which? also recommends opening curtains and blinds after 9pm, if external noise is manageable.
Additional Cooling Tips
The government advises opening windows at night when the air feels cooler outside, using electric fans if the temperature is below 35°C (but not aiming directly at the body to avoid dehydration), turning off unused lights and electrical equipment, and going outside if it is cooler in the shade.
