Researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, collaborating with space tech company Take Root Bio, have developed a method to convert salty whey—a byproduct of cheese production—into fuel. This fuel could potentially heat homes or power vehicles, offering a solution to the environmental challenge of disposing of the 95,000 tonnes of salty whey produced annually in Britain.
What is Whey?
Whey is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained during cheese production. It consists of about 75% to 93% water, with the remainder being lactose, protein, and fat. Salty whey, which results when cheese curds are salted early in the process, can contain up to 10% salt.
From Waste to Fuel
The new method involves subjecting the sugars in whey to a "bio-based" process. While details are scarce, the innovation aims to add value to byproducts that "still contain valuable components but can be challenging to manage," according to Dr Jane White of Heriot-Watt University.
Not a New Idea
This isn't the first time whey has been considered for fuel. In 2021, the then Prince Charles ran his Aston Martin on bioethanol made from whey and surplus wine. However, bioethanol has since fallen out of favor as a green fuel.
Whey's Value
Despite its potential as fuel, whey is expensive due to high demand for protein supplements, partly driven by recommendations to patients on weight-loss drugs. Some suppliers have already sold out for the rest of the year.
