Towels can be restored to a soft and fluffy state with a simple wash using baking soda, according to a cleaning tip shared on a popular Facebook page. The tip, which avoids white vinegar, has gained attention from users seeking alternatives to tumble dryers.
Why Towels Become Rough
Towels can become hard and rough over time due to detergent buildup, fabric softener, or improper washing. While some prefer a rougher texture, others desire a luxurious soft feel, especially when hosting guests. Instead of replacing them, a simple solution exists.
On the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Simone Williams asked: “How do you get towels nice and soft without using a tumble dryer?” The post attracted more than 150 comments from users sharing their tips and tricks.
Baking Soda as a Solution
Sue Howard commented: “You need to start by washing them separately from your other washes and ditching the fabric softener. Then add baking soda to your wash. It makes them soft and fluffy, but I personally prefer a rough towel.”
Ladie Peas said: “Towels go hard because of the laundry conditioner. I always just use baking soda to help remove the buildup.” Debbie Levett commented: “The conditioner is bad for towels, so it’s good to wash them now and again without it and use baking soda instead.”
Adding baking soda to your towel wash helps remove soap and chemical residue that can coat towels. Simply add half a cup of the cupboard staple with your washing detergent, then wash as usual. Baking soda also naturally eliminates musty odours.
Prevention and Alternatives
To prevent roughness from recurring, ensure towels are completely dry before storing them in the cupboard. Some users recommended white vinegar, but others cautioned it can damage the washing machine, so it’s best avoided. Epsom salts and citric acid are also useful household ingredients that can help restore rough towels, with citric acid offering additional uses like whitening towels and socks.
