Oscar Martin, a toddler from Derbyshire, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia after doctors initially dismissed a rash on his ear as a simple infection. His father, James Martin, 38, said the family was told not to worry, but within days Oscar was fighting for his life.
Rash Led to Devastating Diagnosis
In May 2022, three-year-old Oscar developed a red and blotchy rash on his ear, accompanied by a fever. His mother, Philippa, took him to a GP who prescribed antibiotics for a suspected infection. However, within 24 hours, Philippa noticed a purple pinprick rash on Oscar's eyelids and chest that did not fade when pressed—a sign the NHS advises warrants a 999 call.
Philippa rushed Oscar back to the GP, who referred him to a paediatrician at Chesterfield Hospital but advised her not to be "overly worried." Once admitted, blood tests revealed suspected leukaemia, and on June 1, 2022, at Sheffield Children's Hospital, the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was confirmed. James recalled: "I felt like I was almost separated from my body... it was so surreal."
Intensive Treatment and Remission
Oscar underwent two years of intense chemotherapy, including an early type that caused an allergic reaction. He had a port fitted for high-dose chemo and suffered several serious infections, leading to prolonged hospital stays. James described seeing his son after surgery: "He was a different colour... It was like his soul was stripped out of his body."
Oscar completed treatment on July 7, 2024, and rang the bell to mark the end of cancer therapy. He is now in remission but experiences night terrors and anxiety attacks. James said: "What seven-year-old is suffering with anxiety?"
Gardening as Therapy
Throughout the ordeal, gardening together provided an escape for father and son. James said: "The garden became our escape. It gave us somewhere to breathe, somewhere to focus on something positive."
James now shares their story on Instagram to help other families facing childhood cancer. He said: "Sometimes it's good to speak to somebody who's actually done it... I've had so many messages in the last few years."
