Stop Flying Ants Invading Your Home with Vinegar Spray in July
Stop Flying Ants with Vinegar Spray in July

Flying ants are at their peak in July across the UK and Ireland, prompting homeowners to seek effective deterrents. A simple kitchen ingredient—vinegar—can help keep these insects at bay when sprayed in gardens and around entry points.

Natural Deterrent Method

Barbara Costello, known as Brunch with Babs on Instagram, recommends a two-ingredient spray: mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Apply the solution around doors, windows, and cracks where ants enter. "Ants hate the smell of vinegar," she explains, "so the mixture will deter them from entering your home. This does NOT kill the ants."

The acetic acid in vinegar disrupts ants' sense of smell, masking the pheromone trails they use to navigate. This natural repellent is safe for households and pets but requires reapplication as the scent fades. Avoid spraying on natural stone surfaces like granite or marble, as the acid may cause damage.

Additional Tips

Costello also notes that flying ants dislike the scent of oranges. Orange peels can be used as an alternative deterrent. For severe infestations, professional pest control is recommended. The vinegar method is most effective when applied early and regularly during the swarming season.
