Spain Heatwave: 44C Warning, Travel Advisory Issued

Spanish authorities have issued a warning about extreme heat this week, with temperatures potentially reaching 44°C in some regions. The alert, shared by Spain's Interior Minister on social media, emphasizes the risk of dehydration and urges precautions for both travelers and residents.

Official Warnings and Advice

The Interior Minister's message on X stated: "The risk of dehydration in summer is real. On long trips, the heat takes its toll. Make frequent stops. Drink water. Equip yourself with specialized, breathable, or cooling clothing. Protect yourself from the sun and travel safely."

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) also advises: "Extreme weather can affect many parts of Spain, particularly over the summer months. Check warnings from the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET) and the European Meteorological Services." Travelers are urged to check with their travel provider and follow local authority advice.

Heatwave Impact and Statistics

Spain is still recovering from a scorching period in June, which led to 1,028 additional deaths due to the heatwave across Europe—more than double the heat-related fatalities from the previous year. The first half of 2026 was the warmest on record in Spain, with average temperatures 1.6°C above normal, according to Aemet.

NHS and General Health Guidance

The NHS recommends limiting exposure to heat, especially between 11am and 3pm, and staying indoors where possible. Seek shade, wear a hat and lightweight clothing, and apply sunscreen. Stay hydrated with regular cold drinks and cool meals, avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and hot drinks. Cool your skin with showers or damp clothing.

Keep indoor temperatures down by closing windows, blinds, and curtains during the day, and opening them at night. Only use electric fans if the indoor temperature is below 35°C. Monitor room temperatures and check on vulnerable family, friends, or neighbors.
