A homemade mixture containing olive oil can clean wooden floors and restore their shine without relying on expensive chemical products. The solution also helps reduce dust buildup and minimizes the appearance of minor scratches.
Why wooden floors lose their shine
Wooden flooring is a popular choice in modern homes because it is easier to maintain than carpet. However, floors can look tired and dull if they lose their shine. During summer, open windows let in harsh sunlight, which can break down the floor's finish. Dust and pollen also enter homes, and these particles can act like sandpaper, slowly eroding the wood.
Static electricity can build up in dry conditions, drawing extra debris onto floors and making homes dustier. Olive oil adds moisture to the wood, eliminating static charge and keeping floors cleaner for longer.
How to make the homemade floor cleaner
Elizabeth, a mother and founder of At Home On The Prairie, shared the simple solution. She explained: "This solution will not only clean wood floors, but it also uses olive oil to naturally polish and shine them up at the same time! But unlike commercial wood polish, olive oil doesn't leave a residue that builds up over time."
To make the cleaner, mix one tablespoon of olive oil, four teaspoons of white vinegar, one teaspoon of castile soap, and 400ml of water in an empty spray bottle. Shake well before use.
How to apply the solution
Before applying the solution, vacuum or sweep the floor thoroughly, including under rugs, tables, and corners. This prevents dust particles from being dragged across the surface and causing scratches. Then, lightly mist the solution onto the floor in small sections, using a fine coating to avoid over-saturating the wood. Buff the floor with a dry mop or cloth in circular motions.
This method leaves wooden floors looking pristine and helps homeowners enjoy summer without worrying about dust and grime buildup.
