A massive fire has destroyed more than 100 homes in southern Norway, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people, rescue officials have confirmed. The blaze continues to burn through a large residential area in Krokstadelva, Drammen, approximately 50 kilometres west of Oslo, and has spread to a nearby forest, authorities said.
Firefighting Efforts Intensify
Around 80 firefighters, Civil Defence crews, and six firefighting helicopters are battling to douse the flames. The fire, which began earlier this week, has proven difficult to contain due to dry conditions and strong winds. Firefighters are working to prevent further spread to additional homes and forested areas.
Evacuations and Impact
Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from the affected area. Emergency services have set up temporary shelters for displaced individuals. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but officials have confirmed that over 100 homes have been destroyed. No casualties have been reported so far.
"This is a devastating event for the community," a local official said. "Our priority is ensuring the safety of residents and supporting those who have lost their homes."
Ongoing Situation
The fire is classified as one of the most destructive in the region in recent years. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and follow evacuation orders. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
