Nick Coombs Dies at 27 in Motorbike Crash

Nick Coombs, the 27-year-old lead singer of the indie rock band The Spins, died early Friday morning after crashing his motorbike into a guardrail in Wayne, New Jersey. He was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph's University Medical Center.

Details of the Crash

According to local reports, Coombs was riding a 2005 Yamaha motorbike when it struck a guardrail along the right shoulder of a ramp. He was thrown from the vehicle and suffered catastrophic injuries. Police arrived to find him unresponsive. The Wayne Police Traffic Bureau and the Passaic County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit are investigating.

Coombs' brother, Ben, confirmed the news on Facebook: "This morning the world lost a beautiful soul, my younger brother Nick passed away unexpectedly in an accident. Please remember all the joy he brought to your lives. He was truly one of a kind and we will miss him every single day." Ben also noted that Nick was a graduate of Montclair State University.

The Spins' bandmates—drummer Freddy Smith, bassist Phillip Dunphy, and guitarist Jimmy Barr—shared a statement on Instagram: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we regret to inform everyone our dear friend, lead singer, and brother Nick has passed away. There are no words that could ever express the feelings and thoughts we are experiencing... Anyone who has ever met Nick for even five seconds will tell you he was the most warm, outgoing, welcoming, and beautiful soul you could ever meet."

Memorial Service Planned

The Spins announced they will host a memorial service in New Jersey for fans and loved ones. They thanked supporters, adding: "It is a small comfort at least to know that Nick will have a lasting legacy and leave behind so much that he was incredibly proud of."
