A new survey reveals that nearly half of Britons struggle to sleep during hot weather, dampening their enjoyment of summer. The poll of 2,000 adults found that while 39% consider summer their favourite season, 45% say feeling overheated and uncomfortable prevents them from fully enjoying it. Sleep deprivation emerged as a top complaint, with 35% also reporting difficulty keeping their homes cool.
Impact on Daily Life
The research highlights how heat affects daily activities. Almost a quarter (23%) said their focus wavers when temperatures climb, and 23% complained about sweaty public transport journeys. Other frustrations include having to work on sunny days (22%) and pressure to make the most of good weather (14%).
Cooling Station Initiative
To help people beat the heat, mobile and broadband provider giffgaff set up a 'Keep Your Cool Zone' at Boxpark Shoreditch over the weekend. The cooling station, part of giffgaff's Fair Play Summer Fund, offered cooling mists and shaded seating. It served as a pre-match pit stop for football fans watching England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway.
Kate Dohaney, CEO of giffgaff, said: “Summer should be about making the most of the longer days and spending time with friends and family, but for many people, the heat can quickly become uncomfortable and take the shine off the season. We’ve already helped people with some of this summer’s connectivity stings, by providing unlimited data and broadband for less, so we wanted to take things a step further and help England fans keep their cool ahead of the game.”
Top Ten Summer Spoilers
The survey also identified the top ten things that get in the way of enjoying summer: difficulty sleeping in the heat, feeling hot or uncomfortable, trouble keeping the house cool, sunburn or hay fever, feeling low on energy in hot weather, unpredictable weather, increased road traffic, crowded beaches, difficulty concentrating in hot weather, and sweaty public transport journeys.
