Homeowners across Britain are being urged to rat-proof their properties this autumn, with experts warning that a surge in rodent activity could lead to expensive damage. Summer 2026 recorded the highest temperatures ever seen in the UK, creating ideal conditions for an exceptional breeding period.
As temperatures fall and damp conditions arrive, rats leave their underground networks and begin their annual movement indoors in search of food and warmth. With projections placing Britain's rat population somewhere between 10.5 and 120 million, property owners are being advised to look out for warning signs including droppings, rub marks and chewed openings in food packaging.

Ian Wilson, home insurance expert and managing director at Tiger.co.uk, said: "Rats aren't just a nuisance; they can turn into a very expensive problem for homeowners."
"From chewing through electric cables and pipes to damaging insulation and woodwork, a rat infestation can cause severe damage to a property in a short space of time."

Simple steps to deter rats
Wilson advised: "As temperatures begin to drop, rats will be looking for somewhere warm and dry, making now the ideal time for homeowners to give their properties a quick check for gaps or holes, tidy up any outdoor areas and fix any leaks or drainage issues."
"Taking a few minutes now to rat-proof a property could potentially save homeowners thousands of pounds down the line."
Recommended measures include keeping kitchens, pantries and food storage areas spotless and free from crumbs or spillages, storing food in sealed airtight containers, removing garden waste where rats might build nests, and cutting back trees or shrubs to prevent branches getting too near the property.
