Unbelievable new images have shown Manchester smothered in smoke as the Dovestone moorland fire rages on for a third consecutive day. A major incident was declared on Monday (July 13) as fire crews continued to battle the ongoing blaze over Saddleworth.
Firefighting Efforts and Arrest
Fire crews along with police have remained at the scene since the fire first broke out on Saturday evening (July 11). A 20-year-old woman was detained by detectives in Oldham on Monday morning and remains in custody for questioning on suspicion of arson.
Smoke Spread Across Greater Manchester
Smoke was blown over large swathes of Greater Manchester on Sunday, with the smell of smoke masking areas as far as Eccles as well as Stockport and Sale. The fire service said this was due to windy conditions causing a huge plume of smoke to travel across the region.
Dramatic New Images
On Monday, dramatic new images taken from a distance showed the orange evening hue of the smog continuing to mask the city centre, which was completely dwarfed by the size of the plume. In an update during the afternoon, the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a major incident had now been declared.
Official Statement and Public Advice
Work is ongoing to prevent the flames spreading further, but the service added that wind conditions are continuing to blow smoke across the region. "The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident and remains at the scene, where firefighters are continuing to work alongside partner agencies to contain the fire and prevent further spread," a statement read. "Due to weather conditions, smoke from the fire may be noticeable in parts of Greater Manchester and beyond. If smoke is affecting your area, or there is visible smoke nearby, stay indoors where possible and keep windows and doors closed to reduce smoke entering your home." It added: "We are also asking people to avoid the Dovestone area to allow emergency services to work safely and allow for access routes to be clear."
Impact on the Region
The city centre was dwarfed by the smog, with dramatic images showing the scale of the smoke plume. The view from Reddish on Sunday showed the smoke plume blown over the region, and the smouldering moorland on Monday highlighted the ongoing crisis. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service continues to urge residents to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed to reduce smoke inhalation.
