Used coffee grounds, a common household item, can serve as a natural fly deterrent when heated, according to a recent report. The hack, tested by Lauren Bradbury of Ideal Home, reportedly drove flies away from her kitchen within minutes, though the effect was temporary.
How the Coffee Ground Hack Works
To use the method, dried coffee grounds are warmed over gentle heat until they emit a slight smoke. The warmed grounds are then placed in a small, heat-resistant container near open windows or waste bins. The roasting process releases compounds such as furans and pyrazines, which act as a natural insect repellent.
Bradbury described her test: "After burning coffee grounds from my own morning brew in the oven for 15 minutes, I was left with a smoking pile of coffee that made my house smell like a café." She added that within minutes of placing it on her kitchen worktop, flies left through an open window, and her home remained fly-free for three hours.
Limitations and Expert Views
However, the method is not a permanent solution. Bradbury noted, "The magic wore off after that, and the flies started to return." James Copley, CEO of Copley Pest Solutions, said that while smoke may deter flies, it is far from a permanent fix. He emphasized that the most reliable way to rid a home of flies is to eliminate what attracts them.
Tasting Table, a US-based food media organisation, suggests using coffee grounds that have already been brewed, noting they should be dried before toasting. Flavoured coffee may be less effective, as the grounds should be "as strong and earthy as possible."
Scientific Caveats
Emma Grace Crumbley, an entomologist for pest control firm Mosquito Squad, pointed out that no scientific studies substantiate the claim that burning coffee grounds repel insects. Some research suggests it is the smoke itself that flies find repellent, as smoke signals danger to the insects.
