Hexham in Northumberland has been identified as the 7th most at-risk area for wildfires in the UK, according to data from the Moorland Association. North Northumberland also features in the top risk areas, ranking 31st nationally.
Local Fire Service Response
Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service's Wildfire Lead, Robert Stacey, said parts of the county are "particularly vulnerable" to wildfires, especially during prolonged warm, dry weather. The service has recently been selected as one of only six National Wildfire Teams in England, receiving specialist training through the Government-funded National Resilience programme.
Mr Stacey emphasized that while the service is "better equipped than ever" to respond to incidents, "prevention remains key." He added: "We work closely with partner agencies, landowners and local communities to reduce risks through prevention, planning and public awareness."
Public Advice and Campaigns
Earlier this year, Northumberland County Council shared images of the devastating aftermath of a wildfire at Druridge Bay and issued advice as part of its 'Love it like it's yours' campaign. The council urged the public to avoid disposable BBQs, campfires, and discarding cigarettes, and to ensure no glass is left on the ground as it can start fires when caught in sunlight.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) also highlighted "simple steps" to minimize wildfire risk. A spokesperson said: "The majority of wildfires are preventable, and public awareness plays a vital role in protecting our moorland, wildlife, local communities and emergency service resources."
Wider Context
The warnings come as firefighters across the UK have tackled blazes in Dunwich, Suffolk, and the Cairngorms. In Europe, wildfires have led to a national emergency in Spain, forced evacuations in France, and continued to burn in Greece for a second week.
