The new play park at Finch Woods in Halewood is now open to the public after damage caused by vandals delayed its opening. Children were pictured enjoying the facilities on August 14, including local nursery Little Seedlings.
Vandalism caused delay
On August 11, the ECHO reported that significant damage had been caused to the £178k play park, with every piece of equipment affected. A team worked "round the clock" to repair the damage and ensure the park could open.
Cllr Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council, said at the time: "I am absolutely furious to see the damage that has occurred at Finch Woods. There is absolutely no reasoning behind this kind of mindless behaviour, but the impact is significant."
Repair costs and community impact
He added: "The cost to repair the equipment, remove the paint and assess any safety implications or wider damage will run into thousands of pounds. But it is the impact on the local community that sickens me the most. These facilities were due to open in time for local families to make the most of the park during the summer holidays and now that will be delayed due to the actions of a small number of people."
The incident was reported as a crime, with Knowsley Council working with Merseyside Police to review CCTV and find those responsible. Morgan stated: "Let’s be absolutely clear, we will take every step possible to find those responsible and ensure they understand the impact of their actions."
New facilities and investment
The park now features a separate junior and toddler play area connected via a sensory path. New equipment suitable for ages 0-14 includes swings, slides, climbing frames, accessible and inclusive equipment, and sensory panels.
Knowsley Council is investing £1m in Finch Woods, funded by Section 106 developer contributions from the East of Halewood housing development. The park welcomed its first visitors this afternoon, with children climbing frames and playing on the new equipment.
